Commentary: The Fall of Maduro and the Waning of the Post-WWII Order

China called on the U.S. to immediately release Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife on Sunday, condemning the American military operation that detained the couple as a violation of international law.
A spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry expressed “grave concern” regarding reports that U.S. forces forcibly took control of Maduro and his wife on Jan. 3, and removed them from the country.
“The U.S. action clearly violates international law and basic norms of international relations,” the spokesperson said in a statement, adding that the move contravened the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter.
Beijing urged Washington to ensure the personal safety of the couple and to “stop subverting the Venezuelan regime,” calling instead for issues to be resolved through dialogue and negotiation.
