Debt Bondage in Space, and Taiwan by Peter Bengtsen

08 Nov 2023

In their latest article published by The Diplomat, reporter Peter Bengsten analysis the prevasive issue of forced labour in Taiwan.

According to Bengtsen, workers from countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines are vulnerable to exploitation due to exorbitant debts they incur while seeking jobs at suppliers of major global companies.

The article also mentions recent legal developments in both Taiwan and Western countries, highlighting the need for reforms and awareness of forced labor risks in supply chains. To this, the author adds:

“Until such laws are properly implemented, migrants’ best option may be that progressive multinationals will voluntarily remedy workers according to their policy commitments. “
