Against the backdrop of the 25th anniversary of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), Global Neighbours Chairwoman Jovanka Porsche had the distinct honor of meeting with BFA Chairman and the 8th UN Secretary-General H.E. Ban Ki-moon. The high-level meeting focused on the critical evolution of non-governmental diplomacy and the urgent need for cross-border connectivity in an increasingly volatile global landscape.
A Shared Vision for Multilateralism
Under the theme "Shaping the Future Together: New Trends, New Opportunities and New Cooperation," this year’s forum addressed the fragmentation of the global order. The 8th Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a poignant warning, noting that the world is becoming "more divided, more dangerous and less predictable". Despite these headwinds, he emphasized that multilateralism and international cooperation remain the only viable path forward.
Global Neighbours stands at the forefront of this mission, serving as a vital bridge for Track 2 diplomacy. By facilitating high-level, informal dialogues and cultural connections, the organization maintains essential trust and communication channels even when formal diplomatic ties are strained.
Introducing "Tracks to the Future": The October 2026 "Think Train"
Central to the discussions was Global Neighbours’ flagship initiative, "Tracks to the Future," set to launch this October. Moving beyond the traditional "think tank" model, this "think train" will physically connect Europe and China through a journey across Central Asia. The project will bring together a diverse cohort of politicians, business leaders, scientists, and artists to demonstrate that "we are all connected".

Deep Roots in Vienna
The meeting also highlighted the strong cultural and diplomatic ties between the leaders and the city of Vienna, which holds a special place in the 8th Secretary-General’s heart. Vienna serves as the headquarters for the Ban Ki-moon Foundation, which was co-founded by the Secretary-General and the 11th President of the Republic of Austria, Dr. Heinz Fischer. This shared affinity for Vienna as a hub for global peace and dialogue underscores the deep synergy between the Ban Ki-moon Foundation and Global Neighbours.

Commitment to a Connected Future
"As we navigate the complexities of 2026, we are inspired by H.E. Ban Ki-moon’s reminder that cooperation is not just an option—it is a necessity. Global Neighbours remains dedicated to putting diplomacy first as we build new tracks toward a more connected and stable future.
