Xi, Trump Discuss Taiwan and Ukraine in Phone Call Following Busan Summit

Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump spoke by phone Monday evening, with the Chinese leader emphasizing Beijing’s stance on Taiwan and calling for the two nations to expand cooperation following their meeting in South Korea last month, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.
President Xi said their in-person meeting last month in Busan, South Korea, had provided direction for the bilateral relationship and signaled global stability. He characterized China-U.S. ties as “generally stable and improving” since the summit.
“Facts have again proved that cooperation benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both,” Xi said, adding that mutual success and shared prosperity are “a tangible reality.”
The phone call comes as Beijing and Washington continue to recalibrate a relationship marked by competition and cooperation. Both sides are working to defuse tensions over sensitive issues such as Taiwan while signaling a shared interest in stabilizing ties and advancing recent diplomatic progress.
Xi urged the U.S. to help maintain positive momentum, broaden areas of cooperation, and reduce friction to open new avenues for collaboration.
On Taiwan, Xi reiterated Beijing’s longstanding stance, saying the island’s return to China is a key part of the post-World War II international order. He emphasized the historical cooperation between the U.S. and China in defeating fascism and said the two powers should now work together to uphold the fruits of that victory.
Trump described Xi as a “great leader” and said he “fully agreed” with Xi’s assessment of the bilateral relationship. He added that both sides were acting on the consensus reached in Busan and acknowledged the importance of the Taiwan issue to China.
The two leaders also addressed the war in Ukraine. Xi said China supports all efforts to achieve peace and called for narrowing differences among parties to reach a fair, durable, and binding resolution to the conflict.
