House passes $1.6 billion to deliver anti-China propaganda overseas by Marcus Stanley
In a recent article for Responsible Statecraft, author Marcus Stanley examines the state of U.S.-China relations in the context of new measures aimed at countering Chinese propaganda.
In the article, the author dives into U.S.-China relations, warning that the U.S. is heading into a new Cold War mindset. This narrative, largely driven by defense contractors and politicians, portrays China as an imminent military threat, fueling tensions that could spiral into a real conflict. emphasizes that instead of leaning into military escalation, the U.S. should shift towards diplomacy and cooperative problem-solving with China. Framing China as a hostile adversary makes it harder to pursue peaceful solutions, locking both nations into a confrontational stance. The focus should be on healthy economic competition rather than military rivalry. Pursuing diplomacy and multilateral strategies would ease tensions and open pathways for coexistence.
Stanley cautions against letting special interests shape foreign policy, especially when it profits the defense industry at the cost of global stability. Ultimately, a balanced approach is essential to avoid pushing the world into unnecessary conflict
To this he adds:
“The overwhelming bipartisan majority for HR 1157 is a snapshot of a culture in Washington that seems not to see the risk to U.S. values and interests when we engage in the same covert activities that we criticize in other countries.”
