Budapest, February 11, 2025 – A delegation from Global Neighbours, comprising Inaugural Visiting FellowW. Gyude Moore, Managing Director Oliver Radtke, and Event & Office Manager Akos Matern, undertook a working visit to Budapest to engage in discussions on key geopolitical and economic matters. The visit was structured around a series of high-level meetings and public engagements aimed at fostering dialogue on international cooperation and sustainable development.
As part of his engagements, Mr. Moore delivered a public lecture at the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (HIIA) titled “Building Bridges: Africa’s Geopolitical Position in a World of Expanding Influence.” The lecture provided an overview of Africa’s economic diversification efforts, the impact of demographic trends on investment strategies, and the importance of transparency in international partnerships. The session was attended by scholars, policymakers, and professionals with an interest in Africa’s geopolitical and economic developments.

This was followed by a panel discussion hosted by Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC) on “Global Relationships at a Crossroads: New Power Dynamics Between Africa, Europe, and the US.” Moderated by Ralph Schoellhammer, Head of the Center for Applied History, the discussion considered Africa’s position as a strategic economic partner, the implications of demographic shifts on investment policies, and China’s evolving approach to industrial expansion on the continent. The discussion further explored the impact of migration trends, skilled labour mobility, and the changing nature of international economic cooperation.

Further discussions took place with representatives from the Danube Institute and the Batthyány Lajos Foundation.
The visit concluded with a public seminar on “The Belt and Road Initiative from an African Perspective,” which examined the role of international investment in Africa’s infrastructure development. The discussion considered various models of economic engagement, including financing mechanisms, long-term sustainability, and the implications of foreign investment on national sovereignty. Particular attention was given to the structure of China’s investment initiatives in Africa, the economic models underpinning these engagements, and potential areas for increased transparency in international financing agreements.

Throughout the visit, the Global Neighbours delegation engaged in substantive discussions with key stakeholders, contributing to ongoing policy dialogues and reinforcing the organization’s commitment to promote informed and constructive international engagement.
