On September 12, 2024, Global Neighbours hosted Dr. Niels Peter Thomas, Managing Director of Books at Springer Nature, to discuss the potential and challenges of international scientific cooperation with China and to launch the new publication series “Global Neighbours Insights”. About 30 participants from politics, business, and academia attended the high-level event.
Over the past decade, Chinese scientists have made remarkable strides, surpassing the USA and Germany in the natural sciences and leading in high-quality publications. However, since 2018, international collaborations, especially between Chinese and non-Chinese researchers, have declined. This decline, attributed to political, pandemic, and academic factors, risks hindering global scientific progress, which is crucial for addressing major global challenges. The potential loss of scientific knowledge resulting from such a decline is a matter of urgent concern. Dr. Thomas emphasized that research should be treated as a global public good, unrestricted by national boundaries.
In the ensuing discussion, the attendees delved into crucial issues shaping the future of international scientific cooperation with China. These included English and Chinese language education, research politicization, and the importance of academic freedom.
During the event, Global Neighbours unveiled a brand-new publication series: “Global Neighbours Insights”. This series promises to offer in-depth analyses and thought-provoking perspectives on international relations, global policy trends, and regional developments. Aimed at fostering cross-border understanding, the insights will serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, business leaders, academics, and engaged global citizens.
